October 8 will mark the one-year anniversary of Tim Hampton in his role of Commander of the Maryvale Precinct.Commander Hampton grew up in the area and has returned to fight crime.

"I've realized in government work that many of us are trying to achieve the same things, yet we are trying to do it independently," said Commander Hampton.

Pastor Flemming of Maryvale Church of the Nazarene said he welcomed the idea to work with police. "I kind of joked with the other pastors, it took a man with a gun to bring us together," he said. Continue reading online or download pdf mirror

Revitalizing Maryvale. Community Resident takes pride in Maryvale

As a community resident of more than 20 years, Dwight Amery still considers himself a Maryvale newcomer. But he has the pride of a west-side native.

Each spring, Amery proudly dons his Milwaukee Brewers gear at the ballpark near his Maryvale non-profit organization's office, located in the heart of the community he and neighbors work to reclaim with the help of police.

As Amery prepares to sneak off to the game, he speaks about plummeting crime numbers, neighborhood-beautification projects, innovative after-school programs - the reasons, he said, residents now believe in an urban renaissance of Maryvale. - Continue reading online

About maryvale and the west side neighboorhoods

West Phoenix is a neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona, United States. Maryvale is the predominant neighborhood of the near west side, from about 35th Avenue west to 83rd Avenue and from I-10 north to the boundary with the suburb of Glendale at Camelback Road. First developed in the 1950s and 1960s by developer John F. Long, these neighborhoods include inexpensive homes largely developed in the 1950s. Like many older inner-ring suburbs in the United States, the Maryvale district is suffering urban decline as the belt of growth has passed by, moving ever outward. Shopping in this area is provided by Desert Sky Mall, and once Maryvale Mall, Cricket Pavilion offers an open-air entertainment amphitheatre for concerts and attractions. Because of the lower housing costs, Maryvale has attracted large numbers of families and immigrants from all over the world, notably from Mexico and other Latin American countries. It is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the Phoenix metropolitan area.[citation needed]

Unfortunately, Maryvale since the 1990s has seen a significant growth in crime and gang membership.[citation needed] Although efforts are being made by the Phoenix Police Department to help lower the crime rate that is present in Maryvale which has surpassed that of South Phoenix in crime per capita which is higher in Maryvale than other sections of the Phoenix area.

The growing west side of Phoenix continues to spread outward. Newer suburbs west of the city limits are springing up, including Avondale, Goodyear and Buckeye. Further north, suburbs like Surprise, Peoria, El Mirage and the western end of Glendale are experiencing commercial and residential development. - source wikipedia.org
